First new homes completed at Northcote Development
The first of 1200 homes planned for the HLC-managed Northcote Development are complete, with approximately nine homes ready for tenants to move into by Christmas.
HLC Precinct Director for Northcote Mark Fraser says his team is delighted that the first homes have reached completion a year from beginning work at the site.
“Given how much planning has had to happen alongside the building of stage one, to ensure these homes fit with what is a large, integrated development, we’re pretty pleased with progress,” he said.
The Northcote Development will include around 400 new Housing New Zealand homes - an additional 100 homes over and above replacement of existing social housing homes – and 800 new homes for the market. The development’s masterplan is integrated with Panuku Development Auckland’s plans for renewal at the Northcote town centre, and will deliver public and community amenity, including greenway and parks.
There are 59 homes planned for stage one of the development, including a number inspired by the ‘Everyday Home’, the name given to social housing designed by architect the late Rewi Thompson whose passion for a comfortable, new generation of social housing would live on in the development.
“Rewi’s design and ethos lives on in these homes, and I’m sure those who live in them will benefit from his passion and commitment,” said Mr Fraser.
A further 34 stage one homes are expected to be finished by around April 2018. Construction of the final stage one homes, 16 apartments, will commence in 2018, by which time construction on stage two will be underway.
Stage two will now be larger than originally planned, to accelerate the delivery of new homes, especially new social housing and affordable homes. It will extend over a number of years and will provide around 365 new homes, including 225 for social housing for Housing New Zealand, and 140 for the market, with a focus on homes in more affordable price ranges.
